Herdecke is located on the Ruhr in the northern Ennepe-Ruhr district of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Herdecke is the “town between the Ruhr lakes”, between Lake Hengstey and Lake Harkort.

Outstanding elements of the townscape are the „Bachviertel“ as the historic old town with its many half-timbered houses and the Ruhr viaduct spanning the valley and a good 30 m high.
