The town of Herdecke is characterized by the historic old town with its lovingly restored half-timbered houses, by the immediate vicinity of the Ruhr with its attractive riverside path and its location between two Ruhr reservoirs with high recreational and leisure value.
A striking landmark is the Ruhr Viaduct, which spans the valley and is a good 30 m high.
Herdecke has a high recreational value with the forest, river and lake landscapes of its immediate and wider surroundings. Cyclists and hikers are offered an interesting range of regional and international routes. Two hiking trails known throughout Europe lead through the town: the Jakobsweg (Way of St. James) and the WestfalenWanderWeg (Westphalia Hiking Trail).
